I am so glad you’re here and I truly look forward to working with you to regain your financial freedom. It’s time for you to stop letting your debt rule your life!

Virtual Debt Coach, Mike Schiltz

My name is Mike Schiltz, founder of My Online Debt Coach. I started this business with one idea in mind – to help reduce financial illiteracy and get people to a place of living a happier life.

Spreadsheets are my jam! Because I love working with numbers, I earned my Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting from the University of Maryland University College before I retired after serving 20 years in the United States Air Force.

Once I left the military, I started a second career in the civilian sector. I landed a job with an investment company and quickly earned my investing and insurance licenses. Not wanting to work on commission, however, I switched gears and took a job as an IRS Revenue Agent (see? Numbers again!).

While working with the IRS, I completed my Master of Business Administration (MBA) through St. Leo University in Florida and eventually made another career path within the government as an Internal Auditor.

Throughout both my military and civilian lives, I’ve had times of financial struggles. I wasn’t taught how to handle money as a child and I came from a single-parent household. We were always trying to get out from under our bills!

Those childhood challenges translated into me getting into debt as an adult. Even though I wanted to save money, it was tough! Yeah, sometimes I was the guy who paid his Mastercard with his Visa, as the joke goes.

So, I started reading everything I could about how to get out of debt. I learned to do without my “wants” and focus on paying off my bills. It took a LOT of hard work, but I am proud to say that I am now debt free except for my mortgage. And now I am even planning on retiring (again) early!

Once I figured out the strategies that were working for me, I found that I enjoyed helping coworkers and friends learn how to get rid of debt and begin saving for their own retirements. I liked it so much, in fact, that – fast forward a few years – and I completed the Dave Ramsey Financial Coach Master Training

The Dave Ramsey training was a great first step, but I do not believe in only black and white answers. Everyone’s circumstances are unique and require a unique solution.

As a personal finance coach, I will listen to your story. I want to know how you got to where you are at and what you want to accomplish. I will ask questions, work with you to find a solution, and even <gasp> assign homework.

I won’t lie, depending on your circumstances and goals, it might be tough. But in the end, you will take a deep breath, smile that Cheshire cat smile, and live a much happier life.
